I have seen this movie before! This is the third sequel to the new-wave Luddites crying the old Chicken Little lament, “The world is coming to an end!”
The first showing of this disaster theme was during the Cold War with the Soviet Union following World War II, when the Chicken Littles told us nuclear war was going to destroy the planet. From when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, until 1990, the United States produced approximately 66,500 to 70,000 nuclear weapons! American schoolchildren were taught how to put their hands on their heads and hide under their desks. Their parents were given plans to create bomb shelters in their backyards.
We are still here, and less than four thousand nuclear weapons are in our nation’s military inventory, but who can forget the 1964 movie Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, which featured Slim Pickens riding an atomic bomb descending into a Russian city and starred Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove and George C. Scott as paranoid Air Force General “Buck” Turgidson.
The second sequel to “The World Is Coming to an End!” played when it was determined that the technology could be used for peaceful purposes, and we began building nuclear power plants. But Jane Fonda in the movie The China Syndrome (1979) scared us so much that the radiation fallout from plant failures could kill or maim us, and planning for new plants all but ceased.
It was not until less than twenty years ago that former Vice President Al Gore starred in the third drama-queen sequel with his “Inconvenient Truth” series. He assured us we would be dead if we did not quit using fossil fuels that powered the Industrial Revolution and drove the world’s rising prosperity over the last 100 years. Gore’s sequel is in the latter stages of its death throes, but Al came out of it with a major fortune from investments that mostly benefited communist China.
Whereas Al Gore’s sequel only cost the world still uncounted $billion/$trillion in unnecessary sunk funds, the fourth disaster sequel was orchestrated by Mr. Science himself, Anthony Fausci, and caused two years or more of closures of schools, businesses, and government, plus uncounted deaths from his defective policies. After likely financing the Covid-19 disaster, we will never know the truth behind his actions because he cannot be forced to testify, since Good Ole President Joe Biden pardoned him for any crimes and misdemeanors he may have committed.
Sequel Five of this disaster series is now being shown in selected nearby theaters, “Artificial Intelligence”, co-starring some of the usual political actors, a few billionaires, and unknown, perhaps future stars, but with a machine taking over the planet. This latest disaster movie is reminiscent of the 1958 movie The Blob. In this early sci-fi film, a jelly-like globule blob expands exponentially, absorbing everything and everyone it its path.
I can’t wait to see the ending of this new AI production! I expect it will end with AI-directed robots, perhaps like those in the Transformers series of 1986, 2007, and 2024. Will this be Sequel Five, or a new Sequel Six we haven’t been warned about yet? If so, can we call Al Gore back?
Please do not think that I would deny the seriousness of potential nuclear war, pestilence, famine, or conquest possibly arising from the disaster sequences that our citizens have been warned about since we learned to love the bomb. But the briefings on potential disasters arising from technology, science, or weather should be presented by serious people in serious forums. Al Gore either does not understand the intricacies of climate change over the centuries, atmospheric science, meteorology, and multiple other disciplines, or he is a fool or a charlatan, or maybe both.
Likewise, I would not look to Hanoi Jane’s judgment to influence me on nuclear or energy issues.
The serious untold story not reported responsibly underlying climate change, energy use, and AI is the massive reliance our modern world has placed on continuous electric energy and the uses upon which its reliable availability depends – communications and space satellites, supply chains, money transfers, water supply and distribution. These are all requirements modern societies depend on to keep our mostly population-concentrated cities livable.
Do we have backup manual systems or other schemes to prevent Armageddon and chaos from limited available necessities that sustain our existence? Are we properly protecting our vital infrastructures from all reasonable dangers that could destroy our civilization as we know it?
For the mainstream media – please don’t bring on Sweden’s Greta Thunberg to alert us to either the problem or the solution!
