Woodrow Wilson, who served as U.S. president from 1913 to 1921, has arguably done more damage to the American political system than any other president. One hundred years after Wilson created Washington D.C.’s Administrative State, Anthony Fauci used his position within it to magnify the negative effects of the COVID pandemic on deaths incurred, the nation’s economy, our children’s educational achievement, and our confidence in the federal government and medical science to manage diseases. The evils these two men caused will live long after them.
Wilson’s Administrative State placed government decisions in the hands of unelected ‘Experts’ with university-type tenure in office. His progressive ideology failed to recognize that humanity inherits a fallen nature and a propensity to sin. This error allowed integrity-challenged, so-called experts, like Anthony Fauci, to embed themselves in federal offices for 40 years or more while accumulating dictatorial powers and wealth.
Until Fauci surfaced on the public scene, I had considered FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who held his FBI position for 48 years, as the most dangerous bureaucrat to serve in the federal government. Hoover was also ethically challenged with his illegal surveillance and secret files on politicians and other Americans, which he used to intimidate them and enhance his power.
Wilson was the first ‘Progressive’ U.S. president, and he was the only university professor elected to America’s highest office. From his academic background, Wilson sought to provide a theoretical basis for overcoming understandings within the traditional Constitution, especially obstacles to change through its separation of powers and popular consent. Wilson’s progressive view was that modern governance was beyond the comprehension of ‘ordinary citizens’, therefore, progressive experts shouldn’t be unduly constrained by ordinary notions of democratic rule or constitutional constraints.
Of course, Wilson’s plan to overthrow the Constitution and turn it over to unelected experts was never revealed to the voting public or voted upon. His dream has been slowly implemented with ‘experts’ at the Federal Reserve running our economy, experts like Fauci closing schools, churches, and businesses, and experts like Hoover running roughshod over our Constitutionally guaranteed individual rights.
Wilson believed that it was government’s responsibility to ensure individual prosperity. His Administrative State became the framework from which the modern U.S. Welfare State was built. However, by refusing to recognize human frailties, his ‘experts’ failed to build anti-fraud and anti-corruption features into U.S. welfare programs. The magnitude of that fraud and corruption is only now slowly being uncovered and revealed to the public.
In last week’s Senatorial Hearing on the COVID Pandemic, Senators were unable to uncover the breadth of the errors and how to avoid them in future pandemics. This tragedy took the lives of over one million Americans and did untold ancillary damage to our society. Fauci’s ability to take the 5th Amendment over one hundred times, with immunity, highlights how prescient Wilson was in protecting his experts from any accountability for their actions, and in Fauci’s case, even after receiving Biden’s Presidential Pardon!
